Carbon Monoxide Awareness

CARBON MONOXIDE FACT

Every year, the NHS has around 200 people going to hospital with carbon monoxide position, which leads to around 40 dealths.

CARBON MONOXIDE

When burning fuels, an off product is Carbon Monoxide. When a fire burns in an enclosed space, the oxygen is gradually used up and replaced with carbon dioxide. The fuel is unable to burn fully and releases carbon monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, tasteless odourless fumes which in high quantity can kill. Therefore never block ventilation and use it as outlined by the manufacturer.

Carbon monoxide alarms can be fitted in the same room as the appliance in order to alert you if there is a leak.

'THE SILENT KILLER'

Carbn Monoxide has no smell, taste or colour. This means you can inhale it without realising.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING SYMPTOMS

Carbon monoxide symptoms are similar to flu, food poisoning, viral infections and simply tiredness. That’s why it’s quite common to mistake this very dangerous poisoning for something else.

  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Chest pains including breathlessness
  • Collapse
  • Loss of consciousness
  • If you experience these symptons, leave the room and get some fresh air and seek medical advice.

After breathing in carbon monoxide, it enters your bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carry oxygen in your body). When this happens, the blood can't carry oxygen, and the lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to die.

    MAINTENANCE

  • Daily – Empty solid fuel appliances ash trays daily.

  • Weekly – Clean the flue way on the back on the boiler weekly.

  • Monthly –Clean throat plates on room heaters monthly.
